Pumpkin again

Does everybody not have canned pumpkin in their groceries - I mean here in the US you can't escape it this time of year, but Australia, Norway, Germany?

I don't want to belabor the point on pumpkin but I've been getting questions and didn't realize pumpkin pie wasn't a thing everywhere.

I got on the bandwagon today but not for pie.  I pay so little attention to who is eating it at Thanksgiving I had to actually ask PH if he likes it.  I hadn't noticed after 51years.  Here, leaving pumpkin pie off the dessert table at Thanksgiving is like leaving the turkey off the dinner table.  You just don't.

After many studies by many kitchen people this is still the brand to buy. Of course there are many other brands, some house brands, this isn't the only one but people SAY it's the only one.  And if you are going to give it a go, don't get the can of pumpkin pie mix, get this.  Some purists cook down their own pumpkin.  No thanks.
And use this recipe.  After many studies by the kitchen people, it's been determined to be the best recipe.  You couldn't prove it by me but there was a lot of excitement last year when someone said to add 3 eggs, not two.

Inside the label there are also extra recipes that are printed with ink so light I could barely read it so didn't take a photo, and one was for pumpkin bread.  Now I WILL eat that so, since I bought a can to show you I made the bread this morning.

I like to put banana bread or any other kind, blueberry muffins, etc., in these little bowl things. They are the perfect size to cut it in half for PH and I and I freeze the extra for another time. They measure exactly the length of my hand.

I also doubled the recipe because I didn't want to be stuck with the leftovers in the can.  The pumpkin bread recipe also called for - you got it - pumpkin spice.  Well, I don't have that so I tossed in cinnamon, a bit of cloves, nutmeg and cardamom.  Why not? I made a full size loaf and these four minis.

And that's all I'm going to say about pumpkin anything the rest of this year.

  1. I don't have pumpkin pie spice either, but an older cookbook with substitutions tells me exactly what else to use. I'd share it here, but my orange cat just plopped in my lap and he's been asking for loves for a few hours (while I was trying to set up the new home internet, no less - a torturous task not for the faint of heart), so I suppose I'd better sit still for a bit. But I can't remember the last time I actually used it!

  2. No, we don’t have pumpkin pie here. I have never seen pumpkin in a can. Maybe one day I’ll get to try a pie. Your bread looks good.

  3. Yum Yum Yum! I love pumpkin everything: soup, bread, cake, rolls, pie, cookies... Need I go on? I do use the canned pumpkin and keep it in my pantry.

  4. Pumpkin pie is a rarity over here, although I have had it somewhere, way back in the day, maybe the 80s or early 90s. No canned pumpkin here. Although, my neighbour has made a cake using a can of pumpkin soup. It was ok, but nothing to rave about.

  5. Me again. The main pumpkin thing here is pumpkin soup. It is everywhere, but I’m not a real fan. Some is very tasty, but much tastes like watered down mashed pumpkin.

  6. No pumpkin pie here either.
I do like roast pumpkin when I do a baked dinner with chicken or lamb.

  7. I'm one of those who uses my squash from the garden. I use Butternut, Banana, or Hubbard. The Hubbard is my favorite but it's so hard to get into that my husband (the gardener) won't grow it. This year he has grown Butternut squash so that's what I'll use. I agree about the Libby's pumpkin pie recipe. It's the only one I'll use (although sometimes I put brown sugar in with the white). I'm not into Pumpkin bread but I have a great cookie recipe that calls for raisins and walnuts. It also has a glaze on the top. My mother always made them for my dad and her brothers that went for the big deer hunt in the fall. Very tasty!!!

  8. Joining the other AU readers - no canned pumpkin here, no pumpkin pie, no turkey for thanksgiving - in fact even at Christmas it is more likely chicken than turkey...but I am happy enough to cook pumpkin and mash it for what we call scones (biscuits to you) though I have never tried pumpkin bread.
Nor do we have pumpkin spice!!!

How do we manage to live??
