Stars Over Sunset Boulevard

Stars over Sunset Boulevard by Susan Meissner (NetGalley)
The fun of this book was being behind the scenes of one of the most iconic movies of our time.

A hat turns up in a vintage clothing shop in Los Angeles.  Not just any hat, but Scarlett O’Hara’s green hat from Gone With the Wind.  You know that hat, the one that matched the dress made from the draperies.  Shop owner Christine McAllister tries to return the hat to the owners and therein lies our story.
Violet Mayfield is new to Los Angeles, fleeing from her southern home and the heartbreak there.  She finds employment in the secretarial pool on the set of Gone With the Wind.  There she also meets Audrey Duvall, a young woman with stars in her eyes and in her plans for her life.  The two become close friends when Violet rents a room in Audrey’s house.
This is a story of friendship, love sought and the things a person will do to make it happen.  Through life the two women remain steadfast friends but each with secrets and schemes that can only come to the surface when the time is the most sensitive.  Audrey’s dream is to be a star and being a part of the secretarial pool at a big studio means she has her ear to the ground for opportunities.  Violet just wants a life.
But as I said, the fun is behind the scenes of the filming of the movie.  There are books available that take us there but I haven’t read them.  If you haven’t either, then as a backdrop for a story of friendship, this one is a fun read.
