Siracusa

Siracusa by Delia Ephron

Beware of shared vacations.  Couples/friends  author Michael and his wife, Lizzie, a journalist take a shared vacation with Finn and Taylor and their ever present daughter, Snow.  The destination they chose was Siracusa, a small town made of rock in Sicily.  Immediately things start to fall apart in strange hidden ways.  Finn and Lizzie have a past  relationship they can’t seem to shake.  Taylor is completely joined at the hip to Snow.  Michael and Snow develop a special closeness that no one can understand and Michael brings along his own set of issues.  Snow is ten years old and at times we wonder if there isn’t something developmental  going on with her, but then she surprises us so we think, “hmm. Maybe not, maybe Taylor is just a very neurotic  mother. “
Both marriages don’t need much to push them over the edge. There are secret meetings,  playing with each other’s minds, reading each other’s minds and we watch the train wreck approaching to take everyone under.
On the other hand, we notice something sinister happening ever  so subtly in the background that makes the ending well worth the journey.
I know I’m talking in riddles, but you just have to read it for yourself. Giving too much away is giving too much away.  This isn’t a happy story but it sure was fun figuring it out as I went along.
