A Good Food Day

A Good Food Day by Marco Canora

I will readily admit right off the top we are not healthy eaters.  So when I chose A Good Food Day by Marco Canora as my next book to review from Blogging for Books, I decided the only way to fairly review a cookbook is to cook something from it.  If you are a reasonably good cook you can “taste” a recipe as you read it and you can calculate in your head what it will cost you at the grocery store.

I sat down with this book and read it cover to cover with a pack of post-it notes to tag recipes that my husband and I would both like.  There were lots.  And since I asked friends to join us in sampling the planned meal I had to pick something meatless because Mr. Friend is a vegetarian.  Besides the meatless choices I have to say I was bound by the monetary outlay for ingredients I just don’t have nor -gasp-  think I would ever have in my pantry.  And I have to be honest and say there were a lot of specialty flours, gluten free flours that the author says can be used as regular flours.  But I had a hard time finding them or wanting the financial outlay in buying them.  That limited my choices in the dessert round.

For our meal we chose:  Spinach Salad with Roasted Fennel, Oil Cured Olives and Grapefruit for the salad. Roasted Asparagus and Lemon with Chunky Pesto , Rosemary  Sweet Potato Fries, Wild Salmon in Parchment with Olives, Fennel and Lemon and for dessert Oatmeal and Dark Chocolate Cookies.  All of these ingredients with the exception of spelt flour for the cookies was readily available, cost effective and even some already on our shelves.  The meal might be considered tame by grand cookbook standards but remember, I was choosing things based on availability of some of the grains and personal taste.

From the moment we took our first bite of salmon we hardly spoke a word other than “MMMM!!!” The entire meal was delicious, dish lickin’ delicious.  The salmon was sinfully delicious.

If you are a gluten free person you would eat very well from this cookbook.  If you are NOT a gluten free person you would eat very well from this cookbook.  We all declared it a wonderful successful meal.

  2. I am finding as I mature and age...lol.....that I appreciate freshly made meals more and more. That suddenly for a non cook, ( I really hate cooking) I want to slow down and eat a simple salad with fresh flavours than a heavy meal. I have had to cook large hearty meals for various reasons for my children during their health crisis and now it's time to satisfy my palate only. This is the kind of book that may appeal!
